Assessment & Mastery

ZAPZ Prep Virtual Private School • Mastery‑Based Learning & Assessment Framework

ZAPZ Prep uses a mastery‑based assessment system designed to measure true understanding, not memorization. Students progress through courses by demonstrating mastery of skills and standards through quizzes, projects, performance tasks, and teacher evaluations. Mastery ensures students are fully prepared for the next level of learning.

What Mastery Means at ZAPZ Prep

  • 80% mastery required on all major assessments
  • Students must show understanding before moving forward
  • Mastery is demonstrated through multiple assessment types
  • Students may revise and retry assignments to improve mastery
  • Teachers provide feedback to guide improvement

Types of Assessments

Students are assessed using a variety of methods to ensure a complete understanding of course content.

  • Mastery Checks: Short assessments that measure understanding of key concepts
  • Unit Assessments: Tests covering major units or modules
  • Performance Tasks: Real‑world applications of learning
  • Projects: Creative or research‑based assignments
  • Discussion‑Based Assessments: One‑on‑one teacher conversations to verify mastery
  • Final Assessments: End‑of‑course evaluations

Discussion‑Based Assessments (DBAs)

DBAs allow teachers to confirm student understanding through direct conversation. These assessments:

  • Verify academic integrity
  • Allow students to explain concepts in their own words
  • Provide opportunities for personalized feedback
  • Help teachers identify areas needing support

Retakes & Improvement Opportunities

Students may retake assessments after completing required relearning activities. This ensures mastery is achieved through effort, practice, and support.

  • Attend Support Coach sessions
  • Complete additional practice assignments
  • Review teacher feedback
  • Demonstrate readiness for retake

Feedback & Teacher Support

Teachers provide detailed feedback on assignments and assessments within 48–72 hours. Feedback helps students understand mistakes, improve skills, and prepare for mastery checks.
